Frequently asked questions

FREE backup costs nothing up to 2 GiB. Optional assisted recovery is paid: the total quote, service contents and terms are visible before acceptance. No charge is automatic. Email help@ransombackup.com if your question is not answered. Never attach passwords or tokens.

Pricing

Is backup really free?

Yes. FREE lets you create and keep backups using up to 2 GiB of physical storage without a subscription. If you never request a restore, you never pay.

How much does assisted recovery cost?

It is an optional paid service. The price is personal and based on actual account data. Before accepting, your account shows a quote with the total price, service contents and applicable terms. We aim to offer the best possible price without publishing the internal formula.

Is payment automatic?

No. FREE has no automatic charges. You see the complete quote first and then decide whether to accept; during the beta, any assisted-recovery payment is handled manually.

Can I subscribe to the PRO plan?

Not yet. PRO is under development: it cannot currently be subscribed to and no price has been announced. Features, terms and availability will be published on the official website before launch.

Windows setup

Which Windows versions are supported?

Version 0.7.9-beta supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 with Windows PowerShell 5.1 or later. It includes both 32-bit and 64-bit Restic and selects the correct engine automatically. Windows on ARM uses built-in emulation: x64 on Windows 11 ARM64 and x86 on Windows 10 ARM64. Windows S mode cannot run this unsigned beta.

Is Windows 10 still secure?

The client continues to work on Windows 10. However, ordinary Microsoft support has ended for many editions: use a supported edition, ESU, or plan to move to Windows 11. Application compatibility does not extend operating-system security updates.

“The package is incomplete or modified.” What should I do?

Download the ZIP again, extract all files to a local folder and run Installa.cmd there. Do not move individual files. Check the SHA-256 shown on the homepage.

Why does Windows show SmartScreen?

Version 0.7.9-beta is not code-signed yet. Check the SHA-256 before choosing “More info” and “Run anyway”.

Do I need an installation code?

No. You only enter your email, choose folders and accept the Terms of Use. The private key shown next is different: it decrypts your backup, is never sent to RansomBackup and cannot be reconstructed by us.

What is on the new recovery-key sheet?

Version 0.7.9 creates a clear printable sheet containing the recovery key, email, computer name, date, Terms version and essential instructions. You can also save a text copy. Keep it offline and separate from the protected PC: anyone holding the key may try to open the backup.

Can I resume an interrupted setup?

Yes. After the server creates the account, version 0.7.9 stores a local “key confirmation pending” state. If you close the window before printing or saving the sheet, reopening the app shows the same key and lets you complete setup without creating another account. The first backup starts only after confirmation.

Why can I see a shell?

A command window may appear during installation. Scheduled backups start hidden afterwards. Contact support if a shell remains open after each backup.

Can I add multiple folders?

Yes. Use “Manage folders”. Removing a folder stops future backups of that path but does not delete existing snapshots.

How often does backup run?

The first backup starts immediately after setup. It then runs daily at 18:00 local time and at user sign-in to recover a missed run. The client does not power on or wake the PC: if it is off, asleep or has no signed-in user at 18:00, the run is recovered when it becomes available. Temporary failures are retried three times at 15-minute intervals.

How will I know about updates?

Version 0.7.9 checks the official website and shows a banner only for major releases or updates declared necessary, not for every small patch. The daily backup may also show a rate-limited Windows notification. Nothing is downloaded or installed automatically; the button always opens the official page.

What happens when I install an update?

The installer detects the existing setup, waits for any backup to finish, retains the previous application for rollback and replaces only the program. Your account, folders, protected token and recovery key remain unchanged, and first-time setup is not repeated.

Backup and restore

Can RansomBackup read my files?

No. Restic encrypts content, names and metadata locally, and the private password is not sent.

Which backups can I restore?

The account dashboard lists snapshot dates and identifiers reported by the client. Submit a restore request for the chosen snapshot.

Why is restore approval required?

The daily BACKUP token cannot download data packs. An approved request returns a temporary RESTORE token, limiting what malware holding ordinary client credentials can do.

Does “backup completed” guarantee recovery?

No. Keep the key offline, retain another copy and periodically perform a test restore.

Quota and retention

Does 2 GiB mean 2 GiB of original files?

No. It is the physical encrypted, deduplicated repository size. Usage depends on actual changed blocks.

What happens beyond 2 GiB?

About 200 MiB of technical tolerance may finish an in-progress backup. Further uploads are then suspended. PRO is still under development and cannot be subscribed to; for now, you may create a separate archive with another email after considering whether to recover data from the previous one.

Why is there no automatic pruning?

Selective Restic pruning needs the private password, which the server does not have. FREE clients deliberately have no delete permission.

When is an inactive account deleted?

After 60 days without qualifying activity it is disabled and quarantined for 7 days, then permanently deleted. Email warnings are helpful but delivery is not guaranteed.
